Strategic IT Planning and Architecture

Developed strategic IT plans for numerous corporations in various industries.

• Prepared complete IT strategic technology architecture and tactical implementation plans successfully used in 5 global business startups. These plans included staffing, business applications, infrastructure (computing, storage, LAN/WAN network, voice communications and client/servers), capacity/performance estimating, and vendor evaluation/sourcing.
• Organized and led team that developed enterprise wide IT architecture subsequent to the merger of three companies. Resulting architecture established a cohesive vision used for the design, development and deployment of future information systems and IT infrastructure reducing operating costs by 15%.
• Prepared an IT strategic plan for a large global conglomerate where the IT function was dispersed throughout operating divisions.  Found that corporate business strategy dictated significant changes in the IT function’s structure and use of technology. These changes resulted in reduced aggregate IT costs, establishment of clear IT policies and planning processes and major changes in application deployment priorities.
• For major international oil company established the international credit card system architecture and strategy.

Organizational Reviews

Conducted reviews of numerous IT organizations to evaluate the efficiency and effectiveness of these organizations and their alignment with business strategy and objectives.

• Conducted a review of the IT organization’s effectiveness for a large S&L. Study found that IT was investing in antiquated technologies that would result in the degradation of service. Established new technical strategy and recommended realignment of the IT organization to better fit this plan.
• Reviewed the IT function for a major motion picture studio. Found weaknesses in project management methodologies that resulted in delayed delivery of promised projects. Established SDLC methodology and project management practices that increased the department’s effectiveness.
• For a large defense contractor, reviewed the existing IT organization and technologies to determine their readiness for a major new development program. Resulted in a plan to significantly upgrade the IT infrastructure technologies and capacity. Also, establish a personnel development plan to prepare the IT staff for these changes.
• Conducted an efficiency assessment of the IT organization for a major hospitality company.  Study found that given the business direction the IT function was overstaffed and investing in applications without adequate ROI. Recommendations led to the orderly alignment of IT activities and expenditures to company objectives.

Management Methods

Prepared and implemented methodologies and processes based on best practices to fit individual organization needs.

• For a variety of organizations established procedures for computing and network operations including capacity planning, change management, service level agreements, security and disaster recovery procedures, cost forecasting/allocation and budgeting processes.
• Establish production control and change management processes for a distributed multi-tiered system where significant portions of the system were outsourced. The system included integration of computing and telecommunications operating activities that were distributed nationwide. The process assured high quality service and appropriate cost controls over the vendor’s expenditures.
• Establish a methodology to accurately and equitably determine total cost of customer bill preparation for an international telecommunications company. Resulting process was used to accurately compare billing costs between countries and determine best practices.
• Established streamlined SDLC process based on an acknowledged “best practice” methodology. The modified process provided practical yet effective control over system implementation projects and quality assurance procedures.
• Created an objective methodology for the evaluation and selection of integrated business software packages. Methodology focused on user requirements, total cost of ownership and quality factors.  Technique allowed clients to more effectively select packages and negotiate with vendors.
